The Association:
is a voluntary, special interest organization with the legal person status
is a recognized association of breeders
maintains the Herd Book of Holstein Cattle (HB) for the whole Czech Republic
defines the breeding goal and the breed's standard
determines parameters for selection of breeding animals
determines limits for registration of imported bulls in the HB
The establishment of the Association was incited by prominent Black and White cattle breeders. This year, it has been fourteen years since the establishment of the Association.
The Association is focused on activities helping Holstein breeders to improve their herds and to increase economic efficiency of their operations. The objective of the Association is also to secure interests of breeders in relationship with legislative and executive bodies of the agricultural sector in the CR.
At present the Association has 330 regular members who keep 73,000 cows. There are also 200 special members of the Association.
The highest body of the Association is the Membership Assembly. The executive body of the Association is the Executive Committee which is constituted of 15 members elected by the Membership Assembly. The Committee directs the affairs of the Association which are not exclusively reserved for the Membership Assembly. Based on the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture of the CR, the Association is the recognized organization for breeders of Holstein cattle.
The Association maintains the Holstein Cattle Herd Book. The purpose of the Herd Book is to define and update the breeding goal and the breed's standard, the breeding program and the extent and methods of testing of different characteristics and traits for genetic evaluation within the whole population. It also determines parameters for selection of breeding animals, selection of sires and partially in selection of dams. It is responsible for registering herds, breeding animals and their progeny. The Herd Book records pedigrees and genetic values of breeding animals and issues pedigree and genetic value certificates. It establishes and maintains contacts with foreign organizations of similar orientation.
The Association is a member of the Czech Agrarian Chamber. The representative of the Association was re-elected to the Board of the Czech Agrarian Chamber. At present the Association owns 23.41 % of shares of the Czech-Moravian Breeders' Association (CMBA). The majority shareholder of the CMBA with 34 % is the state. The other shareholders are the remaining breeders' associations, i.e. the Association of Czech Spotted Cattle Breeders, the Association of Pig Breeders in Czechia and Moravia, the Breeders' Union, the Association of Beef Cattle Breeders, the Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders and the Czech Association of Breeders. The CMBA is responsible for technical maintenance of the Holstein Cattle Herd Book and for calculating breeding values and processing results of milk recordings and artificial insemination.
The Holstein Cattle Breeders' Association is involved in the management of the CMBA through two representatives in its Board.
The membership in the Association may be regular, special, affiliate and honorary.
A regular membership may be granted to breeders (legal and natural persons) and other organizations engaged in breeding Black and White cattle which agree with the program and objectives of the Associations and acknowledge rights and duties arising from the membership and stated in the By-Laws.
A special membership may be granted to natural persons only; this membership is unsubstitutable.
An affiliate membership may be granted to regular members of regional breeders' associations which are at the same time registered members of the Holstein Cattle Herd Book. The affiliate membership only applies to participation in the Herd Book under the conditions given in the Regulations of the Herd Book.
An honorary membership may be awarded to natural persons who gained exceptional recognition for development of Black and White cattle.
Each regular member is entitled to a single vote. Special and honorary members have neither right to vote nor no be elected to the Association's bodies.
The Association publishes the bulletin "Black and White News" for its members, organizes seminars, trainings and exhibitions. The internet address of the Association is http://www.holstein.cz/.

Holstein cattle in the Czech Republic
Development of the number of milk recorded cows and their breed structure.
The tendency towards reduction of cow numbers has continued this year. During the test year the number of milk recorded cows decreased by 13,635. It is more than in the previous year (4,573). In comparison with 1990, only 33.4% cows are milk recorded at present. As the proportion of recorded cows remained basically the same, its reduction can be considered similar to the decrease of the total number of dairy cows.
The reduction is particularly related to the population of Czech Pied cows. Compared to the previous year, the numbers of Holstein cows (including crosses from grading up) and rosses with a high proportion of Red Holstein are lower by 2,136 and 1.851, respectively.
The development within the Holstein population that was initiated soon after 1989 has continued. The number of purebred black and white Holstein cows has again slightly increased (+2,711) as a result of both an extended reproduction of imported herds and the progress in grading up. The effect of embryo transfer from top Holstein cows is generally lower but for particular herds it is often quite important. In the last year a total of 1,890 cows conceived within the programme of supported embryo transfers.
The number of crossbred cows with the Holstein gene proportion 88 stayed on the same level while the number of crosses with the proportions of 88 and particularly 75 – 87 % were reduced considerably as a result of the continuing stabilisation in use of crossbreeding.
From totally 20,918 crosses with the Red Holstein gene proportion over 50 %, i.e. more than 12,015 are registered in the Holstein Herdbook and the rest are either registered in the Herdbook of the Czech Pied breed or are unregistered.
Results of milk recorded cows 2008
The total number of completed lactations (313,395) decreased by 9,625 in comparison with the previous year. The number of completed lactations in purebred Holsteins was increased by 2,024 with mostly cows in first lactations participating in this growth. Within the whole population of Holstein cattle (including crosses from grading up) the number of first calvers was decreased (383).
The milk production increased in all dairy breeds and breed groups. The average production of all the recorded cows rose by 171 kg milk, 5kg fat (-0.04%) and 6 kg protein (-0.03%). The increase of production in Holsteins was represented by 203 kg milk, 5kg fat (-0.02%) and 5 kg protein (0.00%). Purebred Holstein cows produced on the average 8,707 kg milk with 3.74% fat and 3.25% protein. The average milk production is quite high and is approaching the level of the leading EU countries.
The development of reproduction traits is considered as relatively unsatisfactory. Values of calving interval were included in this survey. In the previous year calving interval was prolonged by 4 days in purebred Holsteins and its length is 427 and 419 days for purebred cows and cows including crosses, respectively.
The number of cows registered in the Herdbook was also slightly increased. Particulary the number of cows registered in the highest part (A - purebred holstein) increased considerably by 5,982). On the contrary, a reduction was recorded in the number of cows registered in the D section where mostly crosses with the proportion of Holstein (genes 50-74%) are included. The number of completed lactations slightly increased (by 1,784) while the average milk production grew more or less consistently with the overall increase of the breed.
